LH Agency Braces to Anticipate Impact of Rainy Season

The Jakarta Environment (LH) Agency is well-prepared to face this year's rainy season in the capital. That is by ensuring the readiness of Human Resources (HR) and infrastructure in the field.

Personnel are on standby 24 hours to monitor at points prone to piles of garbage

According to Asep Kuswanto, Agency Head of LH, as many as 8,945 personnel have been alerted for waste handling in the rainy season.

"We check and ensure the readiness of those in charge of maintaining the cleanliness of water channels, including the readiness of personal protective equipment," he expressed, Thursday (10/14).

He explained, the facilities prepared consisted of 1,543 units of garbage transportation, 118 units of heavy equipment, 47 units of road sweepers and 50 sets of floating cubes for pontoon boats. The pattern of garbage handling is also divided into four modes namely, normal mode, alert mode, flooded mode and rehabilitation mode.

"Normal mode is at the beginning of the rainy season, alert mode is for flood alerts such as the high water level of Katulampa and the high intensity of rainfall, inundated mode is when the flood emergency response is set by BPBD and lastly, rehabilitation mode is post-flood," he explained.

He also added that PPSU members under the Water Agency UPK were continuing to anticipate and ensure that no garbage clogging the rivers, connecting channels, and sluice gates.

"Then there are officers to monitor the development of the situation in each location prone to piles of garbage when there is a flashflood," he said.

He explained, a number of locations were identified as having a large amount of waste produced during the rainy season and became a point of monitoring and special handling when the rainy season arrived, such as in Ciliwung River. Starting from Ciliwung Jagakarsa River to Ciliwung River Bridge, TB Simatupang, Ciliwung Kalibata River, Kampung Pulo Ciliwung River, Ciliwung Manggarai River, Ciliwung BKB Petamburan River, Ciliwung Season City River, and Ciliwung BKB Kalijodo River to the estuary.

As for other locations apart from the Ciliwung River flow were Pesanggarahan, Baru Barat and Timur Baru rivers.

"Personnel are on standby 24 hours to monitor at points prone to piles of garbage such as Manggarai Sluice Gate, Kampung Melayu Bridge, Season City Bridge, etc. When garbage piles up, additional personnel and fleets will immediately move to that location also," he stated.
