Fish Cages and Nets on Seribu Islands Waters will Be Modified

Hundreds of fish cages (keramba) and nets (bagan tancap) on the waters around Cipir Island and Onrust Island, Untung Jawa Urban Village, Seribu Selatan Islands Sub-District, Seribu Islands, will be modified. This is because those fishing gears are assessed have disturbed sailing activities and violated Bylaw No. 8/2007 on Public Order.

We often received complaints, either from the locals of Seribu Islands as well as from tourists and the fishermen. They complained about the existence of fish cages and nets that disturbed the sea traffic

From those hundreds of fish cages and nets, Head of North Jakarta Livestock, Fishery and Marine Sub-Department, Sri Haryati, disclosed that only some of them owned by the fishermen in Kamal Muara, Penjaringan, North Jakarta, while most of them belonged to Tangerang and Banten residents.

“We’ve collected the data. From 435 fish cages and nets, only 35 of them owned by Jakarta fishermen while the rest belonged to residents outside Jakarta,” she stated, Saturday (11/29).

Especially for the fishing gears owned by Jakarta fishermen in Kamal Muara, Haryati told that later they will be modified from currently static to become floating fishing gears that can be moved. Thus, sailing activities would not be disturbed and the fishermen could still make a living.

“If such a thing still disturbing, we will relocate those fishing gears without disrupting fishermen’s livelihood,” she asserted.

Previously, Seribu Islands Satpol PP last month sent the first notification letter to the 435 fishermen who own fish cages and nets. The letter says that those fishing gears were complained due to disturbing sailing activities and violating Bylaw No. 7/2008 on Public Order.

“We often received complaints, either from the locals of Seribu Islands as well as from tourists and the fishermen. They complained about the existence of fish cages and nets that disturbed the sea traffic,” said Head of Seribu Islands Satpol PP, Hartono.
