BPS: Inflation Rate in June 2022 is Still Relatively Moderate

According to the Jakarta Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the inflation rate in Jakarta reached 0.32 percent in June 2022 (m-to-m). Accordingly, the inflation rate for the calendar year is 1.94 percent (y-to-d), while the year-on-year is 2.88 (y-on-y).

Generally, the inflation rate during semester 1 of 2022 is still at a relatively moderate level

Jakarta BPS Head Anggoro Dwitjahyono mentioned the inflation rate in June 2022 was higher than May 2022, which was only 0.06 percent.

"This condition is a reflection of the increase in the price index of several important commodities which coincided with the increasing public consumption activity after normal conditions over the past month," he stated, Saturday (7/2).

He explained that the inflation rate y-to-d or from January to June 2022 reached 1.94 percent. It was the highest since the last three years of the pandemic. However, it was relatively lower rather than the same period January to June 2019 prior to the Covid-19 attack, which was 2.12 percent.

"Generally, the inflation rate during semester 1 of 2022 is still at a relatively moderate level considering it is still below two percent for the last three years," he explained.

The y-on-y inflation rate as of June 2022 was at 2.88 percent, which was still much lower than the same month in 2019 prior to the Covid-19 attack.

"Inflation rate y-on-y is in the range of 3 percent every month," he added.

Although some types of commodities experienced an increase in price, it did not cause shortage of availability in the retail market.

"This condition makes inflation relatively under control," he stressed.

According to him, the 0.32 percent inflation rate in Jakarta was mainly influenced by the increase in consumer prices in three groups of public expenditure, namely food, beverage, and tobacco which reached 1.10 percent.

Then, the expenditure group for equipment and household maintenance increased by 0.66 percent in general, as well as for transportation which experienced an inflation of 0.26 percent.

In detail, inflation that occurred in household spending in the food, beverage, and tobacco group reached 1.10 percent was influenced by the share of the level of important commodities during June 2022.

There are three important commodities that affected the inflation rate in the food, beverage, and tobacco group. They are red chilies which experienced an increase in price with an inflation share of 0.09 percent; cayenne peppers with an increase in price with an inflation share of 0.05 percent; and shallots with an increase in price with an inflation share of 0.04 percent.

"This month's transportation expenditure group is still dominated by air ticket fares, which form 0.03 percent inflation," he uttered.

Fluctuation in the inflation rate during the pandemic to normal condition, Jakarta had experienced seven times of deflation the upward trend in the inflation rate was also relatively low or under control.

He considered the spike in the price index at the beginning of the second quarter of 2022 during June 2022 has also returned to relatively stable price conditions.

"Inflation in Jakarta in June 2022 reached 0.32 percent. It is the lowest inflation rate compared to several other satellite cities, including Bogor, which was 0.75 percent. Then, 0.59 inflation percent in Tangerang, 0.53 percent in Depok, and 0.49 percent in Bekasi," he closed.
