The Jakarta Capital City Government collaborated with the World Bank Group to present a side event for the U20 Mayor Summit 2022 agenda, with the theme “Prosperous and Sustainable Cities: Investing in Prosperous and Circular Cities: Investing in Urban Transformation.

For decades, Jakarta's urban management has focused on private vehicle-oriented development

This collaboration received support from the Ministry of National Development Planning (BAPPENAS) and the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs.

The side event is held today, Tuesday (8/30) in Jakarta, discussing investments that transform urban areas to play an important role in empowering cities.

The private sector has an important role in bringing about inclusive, equitable, and sustainable development. This session is a good opportunity to highlight the role of cities and local governments as strategic partners to realize the G20 vision and to rebuild it better and stronger.

Jakarta Governor, Anies Baswedan explained that the root cause of Jakarta's challenges was urban issues. He highlighted that in recent years development in Jakarta has always been based on private vehicles.

"For decades, Jakarta's urban management has focused on private vehicle-oriented development. It has an impact on the excessive volume of private vehicles. Thus far, we have reformed its urban management to Transit Oriented Development (TOD), which emphasizes the massive use of public transport, to parse congestion and carbon emissions, provide vertical and dense buildings, and integrate," he expressed, as quoted by Jakarta PPID's press release, Tuesday (8/30).

He assessed that the lack of investment in basic services resulted in substandard service. Jakarta is currently focusing on massively developing basic services to improve the quality of life of its people. Even, new approaches to tackling the problem and turning it into reality are under way.

"The main urban development programs in Jakarta today, such as JakLingko, JakHabitat, flood mitigation programs, clean water, and extensive social security programs have been pursued. As a city of collaboration, Jakarta must strengthen partnerships with various stakeholders to ensure the sustainable development of Jakarta.

In the meantime, the World Bank Group saw this side event as a good opportunity to recognize the role that cities and local governments play as strategic partners, to realize the G-20 vision of rebuilding better, stronger, and more efficient cities.

It was also designed to demonstrate these achievements and set an example for U20 partner cities, Indonesian observer cities, representatives of International and bilateral institutions and civil society organizations to invest in circular urban transformation with a comprehensive and integrative vision of the economic, physical, social, and the environmental conditions of the city.

The benefits of such a city transformation, according to global studies, can extend beyond the targeted area and often result in increased mobility and connectivity, greater private investment, and significant social benefits, such as reduced crime rates, improved social cohesion, and economic conditions.

As for the information, the activity was attended by Rotterdam Mayor, Ahmad Aboutaleb; West Java Governor, Ridwan Kamil; Sydney Deputy Lord Mayor, Ms. Jess Scully; Tshwane Executive Mayor, Mr. Alfonso Vegara; Fundacion Metropoli President; Senior Urban Specialist for World Bank as Moderator, Mr. Luis Triveno; and Urban Specialist for World Bank, Ms. Yuko Arai.
