Bina Marga: Sidewalk Revitalization in Jakarta Keeps Being Intensified

Jakarta Bina Marga Agency Head Hari Nugroho confirmed that the sidewalk revitalization in Jakarta will be carried out sustainably.

Talking about building sidewalks is sustainable

According to him, even though the terms of the governor and its partner were finished, it did not mean that the revitalization had stopped.

The statement was conveyed at the launch of the Pedestrian Revitalization Documentation book in Jakarta at Pos Bloc Jakarta.

“Our spirit to build Jakarta doesn't stop at the governor's term or period but develops into the future. Talking about building sidewalks is sustainable," he stated, Monday 910/3).

His agency already has a master plan to build sidewalks in Jakarta in which priorities, stages, and sequences are determined.

“There is no such thing as a change of leadership or governor to stop it. All leaders who replace in the future will run," he expressed.

He explained that the Jakarta administration had built and revitalized 265 kilometers of sidewalks for five years (2017-2022). This number was not ideal, as it was only 10-15 percent of the total length of sidewalks in Jakarta which reached 2,600 kilometers.

“If Jakarta becomes a Global City, there is still a lot of homework. The sidewalk is still 85 percent which has not been done ideally. Now it's not the age of 1.5 meters wide sidewalk. That's what we will develop later," he explained.

Based on an analysis from the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy ITDP, sidewalk revitalization in Jakarta is very influential on changes in the daily behavior of Jakarta residents.

As a result, the movement of people increased by almost 60 percent. As for the switch from private vehicles to public transportation increased by 20-30 percent.

"Moreover, after the MRT Phase 2 LRT operates, I believe the MRT and LRT passengers will increase considerably," he stressed.
