Downpour Brings Flood in Malaka & Pondok Kelapa Cemeteries

Besides residential and streets, heavy rains that lasted all day caused a deluge in most parts of Public Cemeteries (TPU) in Jakarta. Among them are Malaka and Pondok Kelapa Cemeteries, Duren Sawit, East Jakarta, with water level up to 50 centimeters.

T he flood can last long before there was the KBT

Head of Malaka Malaka Public Cemetery, Kasino disclosed the cemetery as wide as 6 hectares is always flooded during rainy season. Due to it is close to the East Flood Canal (KBT), the flood can recede quickly. Water also flooded the lands as wide as 500-1,000 square meters and 75 tombs.

"The flood can last long before there was the KBT," he expressed, Tuesday (2/10).

Flooded Areas in Jakarta Diminished Significantly

Similar condition is also spotted at the Pondok Kelapa Cemetery. From the cemetery as wide as 37 hectares, 1 hectare submerged. As for the amount of the flooded cemeteries is 800 units with water level 50 centimeters.

Responding on this matter, Head of Cemetery Section, East Jakarta Parks and Cemetery Sub-Department, Koko uttered the flood is due to the land was lower than residential. Moreover, a few of the Pondok Kelapa's drains flow into the cemetery land and clogged with trash. Thus, water overflows.

"We'll coordinate with the Water Management Sub-Department to dredge the drains. If it is required, we will also build a waterway," he explained.

His side also plans to install a pump machine to suck up puddles in both cemeteries.
