267 Urban Villages in East Jakarta to Have Fire Prevention Task Force

The Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency (Gulkarmat) has officially formed a task force for preventing fires in 267 urban villages in Jakarta.

Organizationally, the Gulkarmat Agency already has a line at urban village level

Jakarta Gulkarmat Agency Head, Satriadi Gunawan expressed the task force formation would be headed by the task force head as a functional position attached to 267 urban villages.

"Organizationally, the Gulkarmat Agency already has a line at urban village level that functions to empower the community, especially building resilience against fire hazards," he expressed, Wednesday (8/9).

118 RTs in Central Jakarta will Receive APAR Assistance This Year

He went on to say that the task force would carry out the minimum task of reducing the risk of fire in each urban village and exploring with the community, thus each village could be resilient against fire hazards.

"This prevention process must be intensified," he said.

Currently, the Gulkarmat Agency is also drafting a governor regulation relating to the availability of Portable Fire Extinguishers (APAR) in settlements.

"This year, we are also allocating a budget for the procurement of fire extinguishers, which later from the Gulkarmat Sub-agency level in five city areas will be distributed to several fire-prone settlements. Through this task force, it becomes our extension in efforts to prevent fires," he explained.

This fire extinguishers procurement is currently prioritized for fire-prone locations. For instance, one of urban villages in Tambora Sub-district will be used as a pilot project for the Gulkarmat Agency in distributing two fire extinguishers to RT level.

"We'll see later. If the frequency of fire cases decreases, it means it's effective. We will try in each fire-prone urban villages," he explained.

His party is also exploring the potential to collaborate with corporate social responsibility or locals who care to donate or assist in procuring fire extinguishers to prevent fires.

"Because in principle fire is not immediately large and the role of the community is very large in carrying out prevention. How to create community resilience to fire hazards, that's the most important thing," he stated.
