City Continues Efforts to Tackle Waste in Water Bodies

The Jakarta Provincial Government has been running several steps to deal with waste in rivers, streams, reservoirs, lakes, reservoirs, and connecting channels in Jakarta. Recently, the waste filter construction in the TB Simatupang segment is almost complete and will increase the number of waste filters spread across various water bodies in Jakarta. The waste that has been filtered is then processed into useful things.

We'll try to intensify infrastructure to reduce waste

Jakarta Environment Agency (LH) Head, Asep Kuswanto revealed the pile of waste in water bodies had been filtered, sorted, and processed before being transported to the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST).

"Reductions conducted include sorting inorganic waste, composting, and bioconversion of maggots. We transport the remaining garbage from water bodies that can't be processed after filtering, such as styrofoam, packaging wrappers, diapers, etc, to Bantar Gebang," he expressed, in the Jakarta Provincial Government's press release, Tuesday (10/10).

Thus far, the amount of waste that can be processed or reduced from water bodies is 6,249 tons or 10 percent. However, waste in water bodies can be reduced by 27 percent in 2024, with the construction of waste filters in two locations, namely the Pesanggrahan River waste filter and the waste filter at Muara Teluk Jakarta.

Besides increasing the number of waste filters in water bodies, maintenance of facilities, and infrastructure also continues to be carried out, one of which is the existing waste filter.

"Until the third quarter, waste filter maintenance has been conducted in Lagoa Tirem River, Sunter 3 Reservoir Inlet, Perintis Klender, Sekretaris, Grogol – Red Pal River, Sentiong River, Mookevart River, Sunter Kresek River, Tomang Reservoir Inlet, and Kalibaru Timur Cililitan PGC," he explained.

Then the amount of waste piled up from water bodies in Jakarta was recorded at 62,979.3 tons. Therefore, he urged the public to participate in reducing, sorting, and processing waste in their respective environments.

“We'll try to intensify infrastructure to reduce waste. We also encourage the public to care about the garbage they produce. "Reduce, sort, and process it, you can start from your own home," he stated.
