Carbon Emission Drop to 70 Tons during Mass Light Switch Off

Jakarta Environment Agency noted there was a savings in electricity consumption of 83 MWh from the lights out on April 27, 2024, which is the difference in electricity load between 8:30 PM and 9:30 PM.

With these savings, material savings of Rp 120,121,280 were obtained, calculated based on electricity savings of 83 MWh at a price of Rp 1,444.70 per KWh. Apart from that, a reduction in carbon emissions (CO2) of 70.67 tons was also recorded, calculated based on electricity savings of 83 MWh with a value of 0.85 kilograms of CO2 per KWh.

"When the lights were turned off during this action, 83 MWh of electricity was not used. This means there is a money saving of Rp 120,121,280 and also a reduction in carbon emissions of 70.67 tons of CO2," said Asep Kuswanto, Agency Head, Monday (4/29).

According to him, the figures show that energy-saving actions have a significant impact on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and saving costs.

"Because it has a significant impact, this program will continue to be run several times a year. It is hoped that Jakarta residents can practice energy saving in their daily lives," he added.

Asep explained that Jakarta Provincial Government through Environment Agency held Saving Energy and Carbon Emission reduction by switching off lights at several areas and buildings in Jakarta on Saturday (4/27) at 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM.

Lights on several protocol roads and Jakarta icons such as National Monument (Monas), HI Roundabout Welcome Statue, and up to City Hall were switched off during one hour.

This action, he continued, parts of Jakarta Provincial Government in socializing glasshouse reduction by 30 percent in 2030.

"It is also stated on Governor Instruction No 14/2021 about Light Switch Off for Saving Energy and Reducing Carbon Emission," he continued.
