Young Generation in Cipedak Urban Village Successfully Runs Urban Farming

Limited land has not dampened the enthusiasm of young generation on Jalan Jambu II, Cipedak Urban Village, Jagakarsa, South Jakarta. They have successfully cultivated fruit and vegetables hydroponically by using their house's rooftop.

The Latar Babe Garden Caretaker, Farrel Sidqi, said the 'Lahan Terbatas Bawa Berkah' or known as Latar Babe garden was formed by Ahmad Syarif as the land owner and then managed together with youngsters there.

"Our aim in carrying out urban farming is to contribute to the agricultural sector in Jakarta," he said, Monday (7/15).

Farrell explained five types of melon varieties were successfully cultivated by utilizing 60 square meters of rooftop land.

"We also sell the fruit to local residents by Rp 49,000/kilogram. It depends on the market price," he explained.

He added that he also cultivates hydroponic systems and pots for other plants such as Pakcoy, Caisim, and Water Spinach to maintain environmental food security.

"We hope that urban farming can be an example for residents and young people so they can make better use of their yards. So, we young people can make a big contribution to the environment," he stated.
