Realizing Food Self-Sufficiency, Jakarta Holds Simultaneous Planting Activity

The Jakarta Provincial Government through Food Security, Marine, and Agriculture (KPKP) Agency and Jakarta TP PKK held a simultaneous planting activity throughout Jakarta, on Tuesday (1/21).

"Today we are synergizing with various parties to realize food security in Jakarta,"

A total of 3,120 participants from various elements of society, including farmer groups (poktan), TP PKK, and TNI/Police were involved in the activity held in various areas to Thousand Islands.

One of the locations, RPTRA Ria Damkar Joglo 2 in Joglo, Kembangan, West Jakarta, was attended by Jakarta TP PKK Acting Head, Ika Octaviana and Senator Happy Djarot who led the simultaneous planting activity.

Jakarta KPKP Agency Head, Suharini Eliawati explained, this activity was part of Jakarta Provincial Government's commitment to support President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka's Asta Cita program, especially related to food self-sufficiency and food security.

"Today we are synergizing with various parties to realize food security in Jakarta. The crops planted include sweet and pulut corn, chili, tomato, eggplant and other fast growing vegetables,” she mentioned.

This simultaneous planting activity, she added, was first initiated during COVID-19 pandemic as a solution to overcome the limitation of physical interaction and now continues to support urban farming.

She explained that urban farming activities give positive impacts on regional inflation and food security. She assessed that people's interest in urban farming has increased significantly since it began in 2020.

"Jakarta needs about nine tons of morning glory every week and currently we can only supply 2.5 tons. This shows that there are still many opportunities to develop urban farming," she said.

She hoped that with this activity, Jakarta Government would keep promoting urban farming as a way to strengthen food self-sufficiency, while reducing dependence on supplies from outside the region.

"At the beginning of 2025, simultaneous planting becomes a concrete step to achieve food self-sufficiency in Jakarta and support national self-sufficiency,” she stated.
