Jakarta Vice Governor Rano Karno attended the Trash Fest 2025 at Lapangan Banteng, Central Jakarta. Trash Fest 2025 is a series of the National Waste Awareness Day (HPSN) 2025 event.
"We are encouraged to take concrete steps in managing waste,"
The event was organized as a means to build collaboration between government, communities, business sectors, and academics in finding solutions to increasingly complex waste issues.
According to him, the purpose of this event is to make people more educated and have high awareness in managing waste wisely and responsibly.
Jakartans Invited to Participate in HPSN 2025 Event"It also reflects a good culture of Jakartans, who prioritize cleanliness, sustainability, and care for the environment," he said at the location, on Sunday (2/23).
On that occasion, he also conveyed that the commemoration of HPSN is an important momentum to strengthen our commitment and concern to environmental issues, especially in more responsible and sustainable waste management.
He assessed that waste issue is not a technical issue, but also related to the behaviour and culture of the community.
"Every day, Jakarta produces thousands of tons of waste, which if not managed properly, can pollute the environment, threaten health, and potentially cause disasters," he added.
He explained that history records the tragic waste landslide that occurred in Leuwi Gajah, Cimahi, West Java, in 2005, resulting in 157 deaths. This event serves as a stark reminder that improperly managed waste can lead to devastating disasters.
"Therefore,
through HPSN 2025 commemoration event, we are encouraged to take concrete steps in managing waste, starting with sorting waste at the household level, reducing single-use plastics, strengthening waste bank program, and promoting recycling practices at the community level," he stated. He appreciated the efforts of the Jakarta Environment Agency which had compiled a 'Roadmap for Waste Management in Jakarta', as a guide in achieving Waste-Free Jakarta, through the implementation of three main strategies, namely Upstream, Middle, and Downstream, involving community participation.
He stated that waste management must also apply circular economy principles to provide economic benefits at the community level to achieve the target of zero waste in 2050.
"In welcoming the 500th anniversary of Jakarta, we hope that responsible waste management can become a culture in the community a key asset that will propel this city's development into a symbol of advancement," he asserted.
