City Council Targets No Smoking Area Bylaw to Be Ratified This Year

Jakarta City Council is targeting the discussion of No Smoking Area Bylaw to be completed and ratified this year. At this moment, the Special Committee of No Smoking Area remains discussing the clauses.

This becomes our priority

"The Special Committee has agreed to complete this bylaw this year. This becomes our priority," said Special Committee of No Smoking Area Head, Farah Savira, Monday (6/23).

Farah explained the committee has discussed four clauses. However, the discussion was quite heated due to differences in perception and the importance of the definitions in the regulation.

Draft Bylaw to Control Smoking in Public Spaces

"That is why the discussion takes time. It is better for us to be tired of discussing and agreeing on important things now, rather than there are changes or additional inputs at the end," she added.

According to her, the Special Committee will hold another continuous discussion in the next two days to align the legal basis and strengthen the regulation substances. One of the important discussions is determining the special smoking area.

"The limitation must be made, but the designated space for active smokers, especially adult, must be provided," she continued.

She stated that this regulation is also part of effort to reduce smoker number in Jakarta.
