MRT Jakarta Considers Route Expansion to South Tangerang

PT MRT Jakarta is about to provide a preliminary study for its route expansion to South Tangerang. This project to be financed through non-City Budget schemes such as Public-Private Partnership (PPP).

We want to develop a financing route without involving government funds

PT MRT Jakarta's Director of Business Development, Farchad Mahfud said his side tries to start an initial study or exploration, as well as a strategy for developing the route without involving funding from City Budget.

"We want to develop a financing route without involving government funds, or with a Public-Private Partnership scheme," he said, Sunday (7/13).

Expanded Transjabodetabek Route Highlights City’s Commitment to Reducing Traffic

He added that the across provinces MRT system development requires not only technical studies but also a different social, fiscal, and regulatory approach than the development in Jakarta region.

"We need to study about the fiscal and social character of other provinces," he added.

According to him, communication between Jakarta Provincial Government and South Tangerang City Government had been made. The study can be start soon.

As for information, MRT Jakarta development to South Tangerang is included in the National Medium-Term Development Plan 2025 (RPJMN) through Presidential Decree Number 12/2025.

The expansion is assessed as one of solutions to reduce congestion between the Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek) area.

Jakarta Provincial Government has prepared an initial capital as a sign of its commitment. This development is still in the exploratory stage without cost estimation or technical implementation yet.
