Teluk Gong Market Becomes a Model for Waste Management

The North Jakarta Environmental Agency has asked market managers managed by the government through BUMD or private entities to implement independent waste management as in the Jaya Teluk Gong Market

Jaya Teluk Gong Market also has a waste bank for inorganic waste

North Jakarta Environmental Sub-agency Head, Edy Mulyanto said that as a pilot project, Jaya Teluk Gong Market has implemented several self-managed waste management systems through composting and maggot cultivation (Black Soldier Fly/BSF larvae) for organic waste treatment.

"The market also has a waste bank for inorganic waste. It has been running well so far, even though there are still some shortcomings such as the sorting of waste by tenants," he expressed, Wednesday (7/16).

He explained, market caretakers and tenants are continually asked to manage their waste independently from the source. This aims to reduce the amount of waste sent to the Bantar Gebang Landfill.

He assessed, market areas are one of the biggest contributors of waste in urban areas. Therefore, market authorities must also be responsible for independently managing waste.

"Waste management can't rely solely on Bantar Gebang Landfill; it must start from upstream, one of which is the market area. Upstream management is a shared responsibility," he explained.

He added, waste management in the area had been regulated in Gubernatorial Regulation No. 102/2021 on Waste Management Obligations in the Area and Companies.

There are 30 market units in North Jakarta that included in the examination report (BAP) by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry as they have not properly managed waste.

"In details, 27 out of 31 market units owned by BUMD and three private units. We've invited the managers and given them instructions following the Minister's orders. Insya Allah (God willing), this week we, together with the Waste Management Director, will invite them again," he explained.

He is optimistic that if waste management from the source is running optimally, it can minimize the waste generation in Jakarta. Therefore, all communities, especially in North Jakarta, must implement Reduce, Sort, and Recycle waste (KuPiLa) from the source.

"We will keep intensifying supervision and socialization in all regions to create an optimal household and market waste management model," he continued.

Environmental Minister, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq asserted, field verification for 30 market units in North Jakarta had been completed.

"They (markets) will have one month or 30 days to carry out waste management improvements," he explained.

He asserted waste is a shared responsibility and that waste management is not actually complicated. However, it requires a high level of public awareness to reduce the volume of waste in Jakarta.

"Waste can be sorted and processed, then sold. It can become a source of income," he stated.
