Green Building Certification Accelerates Jakarta's Path Toward a Global City

Jakarta City Council Commission A Member, Manuara Siahaan believes that accelerating green building certification for all government buildings within the Jakarta Government is a strategic step in encouraging Jakarta to move up from position 74 to the top 50 global cities.

This certification is not only a symbol of a modern, environmentally friendly city but also part of energy efficiency and budget savings, as well as an important indicator in global city assessments.

As a modern city aiming for global city status, almost all government buildings should meet those criteria for energy savings.

"Entering a green building involves an assessment by a competent consultant. The criteria are clear, involving evaluation variables such as energy efficiency, water usage, room effectiveness, and work comfort," she expressed, Monday (8/11).

She explained that the green building certificate has several levels, ranging from Gold to the highest, Platinum.

"This is one of the indicators towards becoming a global city. At a minimum, it should be gold," she explained.

Manuara recommends that the Public Works, Spatial Planning, and Land (CKTRP) Agency accelerate the implementation of green building standards in all office buildings under the Jakarta Government environment. He emphasizes that this certification does not need to alter the main design, especially if the building is a cultural heritage site.

"Even old buildings can become green buildings. Installation systems, water management, electrical systems, and sound systems can be optimized without altering the original shape. If that is achieved, it would be amazing to have a heritage building that is also energy-friendly," she explained.

Besides energy efficiency, he believes that green building certification will help improve Jakarta's ranking in the list of global cities.

"If you want to advance in rank, all indicators must be clear, broken down, and assigned to the related SKPDs. One of them is related to government building certification," she added.

She added, this concept aligns with the public service standardization program across all areas of Jakarta. The quality of services and facilities must be uniform from the village level up to the mayor.

"People come to the urban village office in Kebagusan or Cipinang Utara, and the reception and service are the same. That shapes Jakarta's image as a public service city," she said.
