Collaborative Waste Handling Seen as Key to Tackling Environmental Issues

Coordinator of the NU Mendengar program, Abdul Azis, said this collaboration marks an important moment to strengthen synergy between the public and government. The NU Mendengar program is PWNU's initiative to listen to public voices to formulate real solutions.

Although the Jakarta Provincial Government has strived to deal with waste issues, only 13 percent of households sort their waste as per regulation. Meanwhile, more than half of the waste entering the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Facility originates from households, markets, and commercial areas.
"Yet the capacity at Bantargebang now has only 10 percent left. That means a major task still awaits all of us," he asserted.
According to him, waste issues are not only about technology but also about public behavior and awareness. Therefore, collaboration among the public, government, and religious leaders is key to change.
Through a community-based approach, Jakarta NU has started a prototype organic waste management project in West Jakarta using maggot bioconversion. He said this model has proven effective and serves as an example of implementing a circular economy.
PWNU targets to establish 50 pilot community nodes by the end of 2025, each handling an average of 25 kilograms of organic waste daily.
"For this program, we are collaborating with Jakarta Environment Agency; Food Security, Marine and Agriculture Agency; as well as Baznas Bazis,” he stated.
PWNU also plans to cooperate with Perumda Pasar Jaya and PT Jakarta Propertindo (Perseroda) or Jakpro to manage waste in market and commercial areas.
Abdul mentioned that this circular economy movement by Jakarta NU could reduce daily waste generation by up to 10 percent, using far more efficient budgets.
