Rorotan RDF, a Solution to Jakarta's Waste Problem

Jakarta City Council Commission D Member, Ghozi Zulazmi supports the acceleration of operations at the Rorotan Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) Plant as part of efforts to solve the waste problem in the capital.

To resolve the waste management issues in Jakarta

"RDF is actually one of the programs. There are two in Jakarta. The first is in Bantargebang, which has already been running, and the other is in Rorotan, which is currently in the process of operation. It should be able to operate by the beginning of 2025," he expressed, Tuesday (10/14).

He explained, there was a technical issue that prevented Rorotan RDF from operating according to schedule. However, Ghozi is optimistic that the facility can start operating by the end of October 2025.

Prime Area Arrangement in Rorotan Reaches 95 Percent

"Insya Allah (God willing), at the end of this year, in October, following the agreement between the Environmental Agency friends and the community, this Rorotan RDF will be operated. The goal is to resolve the waste management issues in Jakarta," he explained.

According to him, Jakarta produces approximately 7,500–8,000 tons of waste every day, most of which is sent to Bantargebang Landfill. This situation is deemed to pose a risk of overburdening the facility.

"We can imagine that if everything is burdened onto Bantargebang, it would already be overloaded. Hence, it must be distributed to other places that can manage it well, one of which is Rorotan," he added.

Ghozi added that the issue raised by residents around Rorotan regarding the bad odor caused by the deodorant system that had previously malfunctioned has now been resolved.

"We have already asked for it to be repaired immediately. Now, during operational testing and community involvement, they reported that the smell has significantly reduced, even gone entirely," he explained.

He emphasized that Commission D will keep overseeing the operation of Rorotan RDF to ensure it runs smoothly and does not cause negative impacts on the surrounding community.

He hoped that, the RDF operation could be a real solution in addressing the waste problem in Jakarta comprehensively without causing new issues for residents.

"We request to be involved to ensure everything runs smoothly. So, later, when it is truly operational, there are no more complaints from the community. The waste management issues and the movement of trucks back and forth must also be fully resolved," he said.
