Jakarta City Council's Commission A Member, Kevin Wu appealed the Jakarta Provincial Government to anticipate potential flooding due to extreme weather, especially in West Jakarta.

"I remember visiting a flooded area in Kedoya Selatan last March. The floodwaters were waist-deep. The flooding also displaced hundreds of people and disrupted local activities," he said, Wednesday (10/15).

Kevin urged the Jakarta Provincial Government to pay greater attention to the area. He stated that several areas in West Jakarta are prone to flooding due to overflowing rivers caused by inadequate water control infrastructure.

"At that time, Kedoya Selatan lacked water pumps. Further observations in the field also showed that the existing embankment was already lower than the water level. It's possible that it could be raised further in the future," he added.

According to him, West Jakarta residents need repairs and improvements to water control infrastructure to deal with extreme weather that has the potential to cause flooding.

"This flooding wasn't solely caused by a lack of adequate infrastructure. Furthermore, trash thrown into the river by local residents also clogged the waterways, causing the river to overflow," he continued.

For this reason, Kevin encouraged the Jakarta Provincial Government to increase the intensity of dredging and cleaning water channels as an anticipatory measure to deal with the potential impacts of La Nina.

"The Jakarta Provincial Government may increase the intensity of river dredging and cleaning the water channels to prevent blockages when the extreme weather that is predicted to occur soon arrives," he stated.
