Prioritize Residents' Safety, Jakarta on Alert for Extreme Heat

Jakarta Governor, Pramono Anung, instructed all regional apparatuses to act quickly in mitigating the impact of the extreme heat in Jakarta over the past few days.

Our main focus is to protect the health and safety of Jakarta residents

He also asked his staff to ensure the health and safety of residents.

"We understand that this situation is not easy for the community. Therefore, I have asked the related units to carry out data-based mitigation and cross-sector collaboration. Our main focus is to protect the health and safety of Jakarta residents amidst this extreme weather," he expressed, at Jakarta City Hall, Friday (10/17).

Based on data from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the air temperature in Jakarta on Wednesday (10/16) reached 35 degrees Celsius, with a daily temperature range between 26 and 34 degrees Celsius. Previously, on October 14, 2025, temperatures recorded ranged from 34 to 37 degrees Celsius in several areas.

They estimate that this extreme heat condition could persist until the end of October or early November. This condition is influenced by the apparent movement of the sun and the strengthening of the Australian Monsoon, which reduces humidity in the southern regions of Indonesia, including Jakarta.

Following up on this condition, residents are urged to remain vigilant and disciplined in protecting themselves, including by:

- Avoiding direct exposure to sunlight between 10 AM and 4 PM, when solar radiation intensity peaks

- Using personal protective equipment, such as umbrellas, hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen when outdoor activities are necessary

- Drinking plenty of water to keep the body well-hydrated

- Reducing strenuous outdoor physical activities, especially for children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses

- If you have to be outdoors, try to seek shade under trees, canopies, or use damp head coverings to lower body temperature

"We need to discipline ourselves to stay hydrated, reduce outdoor activities during the daytime, and make use of cooler public spaces if necessary," he explained.

He ensures that the Jakarta government will keep providing public services, especially in the health sector, to keep operations running optimally. Additionally, the government has also prepared several strategic cross-agency measures to reduce the impact of extreme heat.

Those efforts include:

1. Weather modification

BPBD is expanding weather modification operations (WMO) in collaboration with BMKG to regulate rainfall distribution and monitor the potential for extreme weather

2. Healthcare preparedness

Health Agency (Dinkes) has increased the readiness of healthcare facilities to handle cases of dehydration, heatstroke, and respiratory infections (ISPA), as well as conducted public education to prompt residents to maintain fluid intake and limit outdoor activities from 10 AM to 2 PM. Healthcare workers also monitor and distribute drinking water to vulnerable groups

3. Greening and environment

Parks and City Forest Agency, in collaboration with the Environmental Agency, is accelerating tree planting and water mist spraying during peak heat hours to reduce microclimate temperatures and increase oxygen levels. Monitoring of trees at risk of falling due to strong winds has also been intensified

4. Education in schools

Education Agency ensures that every school implements an emergency standard operating procedure for hot temperatures, including regulating outdoor activities for students

5. Community empowerment

Community empowerment is done through collaboration with environmental and transportation communities to promote adaptive behaviors, such as mask-wearing, reducing vehicle emissions, and utilizing shaded public green spaces for pedestrians and cyclists

Residents are urged to continue following official information from BMKG and to promptly report emergency conditions through the 112 service.
