Pramono Prepares New Land to Overcome Limited Cemetery Space in Jakarta

Jakarta Governor, Pramono Anung, has said that the Jakarta government will soon resolve the issue of land for the Public Cemetery (TPU), which is now becoming increasingly crowded.

We will seek solutions to open new cemeteries

Pramono has instructed the Jakarta Parks and City Forest Sub-agency (Distamhut) to find a solution for opening new cemetery land in feasible locations. Currently, only about 11 cemeteries remain that can accept bodies without stacking.

"This is a real problem as one of the big cities in Jakarta, and I am presenting it as it is. We will seek solutions to open new cemeteries," he expressed, under the Wiyoto Wiyono Toll Road, Jalan Jampea, Koja, North Jakarta, Friday (10/24).

Preventing Budget Accumulation, Pramono Urges Accelerated Project Auctions

Out of the 80 cemeteries in Jakarta, 69 are already full and only accept burial services using the overlapping system with family plots.

"There are approximately 80 cemeteries in Jakarta, and almost 60 of them are already full. We can use them as resting places, but this becomes a problem that the government needs to address," he explained.

Aside that, the Jakarta government is also considering converting Covid-19 graves whose families are unknown or nonexistent into public cemeteries. Further, they will hold a special meeting to discuss resolving the issue of the shortage of cemetery land.

"For the Covid-19 graves at that time, most of the families in Jakarta were not present, so we will also use such graves for the public cemetery," he stated.
