Gubernur Pramono saat menghadiri peringatan Hari Santri di Balai Agung, Balai Kota DKI Jakarta

Pramono Appreciates Ulama and Santri for Their Roles in Nation Development

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung emphasized the central role of ulama (Islamic scholars) and santri (Islamic boarding school students) in the nation development. He delivered the statement during a gathering commemorating the 2025 Santri Day at Balai Agung, Jakarta City Hall, on Wednesday (10/22).

"This is one form of appreciation and respect for santri,"

The event, attended by the Jakarta Regional Office of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), and the Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI), served as a gesture of appreciation and recognition by the Jakarta Provincial Government for santri community.

"This is one form of appreciation and respect for santri. I know that their contributions began not only after independence, but even before, they had already played an extraordinary role,” conveyed Pramono.

He noted that many leaders emerged from Islamic boarding schools before formal education systems existed. Therefore, he believes the role of ulama and santri remains essential in nation-building.

“That's why there should no longer be any division or dichotomy on this matter. It's resolved, and it's our shared responsibility to uphold it,” he added.

Santri Day was established through Presidential Decree No. 22/2015. Pramono encouraged santri to uphold six core strengths: faith, knowledge, good deeds, morality, unity, and perseverance.

He also stressed the importance of balancing religious and civic education as preparation for future leadership. Pramono hoped that santri would emerge as capable, determined individuals who advance national development.

“On this Santri Day, I sincerely hope you will use this opportunity to prepare yourselves to become future leaders of the nation,” Pramono said.

On this occasion, Pramono also expressed his concern over the recent tragedy that struck Al Khoziny Islamic Boarding School in Sidoarjo and its students.

Meanwhile, Head of the Jakarta Regional Office of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Kiai Adib, stated that Santri Day is a recognition of the historical role and significant contributions made by santri and religious scholars in Indonesia's fight for independence.

“Since Jihad Resolution on October 22, 1945, santri have left a golden mark in defending Indonesia's independence and safeguarding the unity of the Republic,” he mentioned.

He emphasized that beyond preserving the country's spiritual and ethical foundations, santri must also play a role in advancing development, shaping culture, and fostering religious moderation amid global shifts.

Kiai Adib also appreciated the support given by the Jakarta Provincial Government to pesantren and santri. He noted that collaboration between local government and Ministry of Religious Affairs reflects the true spirit of ukhuwah wathoniyah, or national solidarity, in building Jakarta as a progressive, religious, and civilized global city.

“May this gathering strengthen our synergy in safeguarding Indonesia's independence and advancing a just, civilized, and forward-looking global civilization,” he shared.
