South Jakarta Steps Up its Game with Thrice-Weekly Cleanups

Community cleanups have become a staple for the South Jakarta City administration as they strive to maintain a pristine environment and nip flood risks in the bud.

"It is a standard procedure across all areas

South Jakarta Mayor Muhammad Anwar stated that he has given the marching orders to all levels of government—from sub-districts to the city administration—to conduct mass cleanups every Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday.

"It is a standard procedure across all areas. For larger-scale operations, we go all out once a month, rotating the locations to ensure every corner is covered," he expressed, Monday (2/9).

Jakarta Unites for a Massive 'Clean Sweep' Across All Districts

Anwar explained that the community cleanups are just one piece of the puzzle. South Jakarta has been hitting the ground running with disaster mitigation efforts for the past six months, and the momentum is still going strong.

Through the Water Resources (SDA) Sub-agency, the city is pulling out all the stops: normalizing rivers, dredging silt from major waterways, and upgrading retention ponds (embung) to ensure they are up to par.

A major highlight of this strategy is the installation of 30-meter-deep infiltration wells. These wells are a game-changer, capable of 'swallowing' 10,000 liters of water in just 20 minutes.

"These tech-heavy initiatives got a shot in the arm from Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs, which helped fund vital equipment and support," he noted.

He hopes the administration's efforts will lead by example, encouraging the public to step up their role in preserving the environment.

"Cleanliness shouldn't just be a priority during the wet season—it needs to be woven into the fabric of our daily lives," he stated, urging everyone to make environmental care a permanent habit.
