From 20 to 50+: How Untung Jawa Island is Transforming 'Ngabuburit' into Fun Learning

To make the most of the holy month, the Amiterdam Child-Friendly Space (RPTRA) in Seribu Islands is hosting a series of events that are second to none for local youth.

The best part? I’ve made so many new friends!

In a seamless collaboration with the Seribu Islands Library and Archives Section, the program aims to provide a productive outlet for children. Miftahul Fausta noted that these activities are a way to ensure the children stay on their toes and engaged with their community.

"It aims to keep them active through educational play. The park comes alive at 4 PM as the children arrive to enjoy the sessions," he stated, Tuesday (2/24).

By doing so, the park management hosts a variety of engaging activities, ranging from reading and coloring to a mix of traditional and modern games, all infused with educational values.

According to him, the program caters to a wide demographic, including toddlers (ages 3-5), children (ages 6-12), and teenagers (ages 13-17). Participants have shown immense enthusiasm, with every session running smoothly and filled with joy.

"Alhamdulillah (thank God), we’ve seen a significant surge in participants during Ramadan. While we typically host around 20 children, that number has now jumped to over 50," he explained.

Miftahul envisions the program as a catalyst for creativity and a love for reading. By blending the old with the new—preserving heritage through traditional games while introducing educational modern play—the initiative aims to mold young characters and foster a sense of belonging from an early age.

"This is more than just a playground; it’s a nurturing ground for growth. We want the spirit of Ramadan to shine through activities that not only keep the kids engaged but also instill positive values and strengthen community bonds," he explained.

The impact is clearly felt by local parents. Diana (36), a resident of Untung Jawa Island, is a regular at the park with her five-year-old daughter, Aleza Shaquena. For her, the park is a safe haven where fun and learning go hand-in-hand.

"My daughter is over the moon every time we come here. Besides playing with her peers, she’s being introduced to the world of books, helping her get into the groove of reading from a very young age," Diana shared.

The children themselves are the heart of this success. Eight-year-old Kayra shared that the park has become her favorite spot to kill time after school while waiting for Iftar (the breaking of the fast).

"I've been having a blast coloring and learning traditional games. The best part? I’ve made so many new friends!," Kayra said with a smile.
