Despite concerns over global market volatility triggered by the escalating US-Israel and Iran standoff, the Jakarta government confirms that the capital’s food security is well-guaranteed for the Ramadan and Idulfitri season.
The city is firmly in a safe zone
This assurance comes as a direct response to the simmering global geopolitical climate, specifically the intensifying friction between the United States (US), Israel, and Iran, which threatens to disrupt international commodity markets.
"Based on our food demand and supply projections, all strategic commodities in Jakarta are currently in a stable state with sufficient reserves, even as the US-Israel and Iran conflict heats up," stated Jakarta Industry, Trade, Cooperatives, and SMEs Agency (PPKUKM) Head, Elisabeth Ratu Rante Allo, Monday (2/3).
No Need to Worry: Pramono Guarantees Ample Food Stocks for JakartaShe explained that the Jakarta government has meticulously mapped out consumption forcests for the Ramadan and Idulfitri festivities.
While acknowledging a seasonal spike in demand—particularly for poultry eggs, which have jumped by 7.5%, as well as beef, buffalo, and garlic, which rose by 3.5%—she assured the public that reserves remain robust. Rice stockpiles, for instance, currently exceed 100,000 tons, providing a substantial buffer against the 68,000-ton monthly requirement.
"Further, our poultry and beef reserves are currently several times the volume of our monthly needs. Granulated sugar and cooking oil supplies are also plentiful, with stocks reaching tens of thousands of tons, all of which have been declared sufficient," she noted.
Ratu highlighted that strategic commodity consumption is set to escalate this month in anticipation of Idulfitri. Early figures indicate a significant 17% spike for eggs, while chicken and shallots are trailing with a 10% increase.
"However, with rice inventory topping 136,000 tons against a 78,000-ton requirement, the city is firmly in a safe zone. We have secured ample reserves across all categories, including proteins and horticultural goods, to act as a vital cushion against seasonal price volatility," she explained.
To mitigate the ripple effects of international dynamics, Jakarta is taking a proactive stance on food security. The city is bridging the gap between BUMDs, distributors, and retailers to keep the supply chain moving smoothly.
"Price surveillance will be significantly tightened. If we find any unfair price spikes, we’re ready to step in with targeted interventions—from low-cost food fairs to massive market operations," Ratu noted.
She emphasized that there is absolutely no need for hoarding or panic buying, as the city’s strategic reserves are more than enough to last until the holiday ends.
"We are dedicated to keeping prices steady and supplies accessible, ensuring a worry-free festive season for every Jakartan," she added.
