Dry Season Boost, Jakarta Fishermen See Surge in Fish Hauls

Jakarta’s fishing industry is thriving amidst the long dry spell. According to Hasudungan Sidabalok, Head of Jakarta Maritime, Fishery and Food Security Agency (KPKP), the current climate conditions are promoting upwelling, a movement of cold, nutrient-dense water to the ocean's surface.

It’s a productive season for our local fishing communities

These nutrients act as a fertilizer for plankton, creating a rich feeding ground for marine life.

"With more food available, populations of anchovies, blue swimming crabs, and tiny shrimp (rebon) are flourishing. It’s a productive season for our local fishing communities," he expressed, Tuesday (8/4).

Jakarta Fishermen Urged to Use Technology for Maximum Fish Catch Results

Beyond the bountiful hauls, the radiant weather is proving to be a windfall for fishermen and the fish processing sector.

"The high solar intensity significantly accelerates the drying process for salted fish. This not only preserves the quality but also streamlines production, making it far more efficient," he explained.

He assessed, years of experience have made these fishermen experts in navigating the sea's cycles.

"They’ve learned to be proactive. By carefully managing their fishing boom'earnings, they ensure they have enough to sustain their families when the lean season inevitably arrives," he explained.

To ensure long-term success, his agency is doubling down on its support for local fishermen. This includes a comprehensive range of annual programs, from facility upgrades and skill training to mentoring for increased independence.

"We are constantly coordinating to secure the quota for subsidized fuel. By making sure it’s easy to access and reaches the right hands, we ensure that our fishermen can stay out at sea and maintain their livelihoods throughout the year," he stated.
