Independence Momentum to Strengthen Jakarta’s Identity and People Welfare

Jakarta Legislative Council Chairman Suhud Alynudin joined the 81st Independence Day ceremony at Jakarta City Hall on Monday (8/17).

Jakarta must establish itself as a modern and cultured city

According to Suhud, this year’s anniversary is a major milestone for Jakarta as the city nears its 500-year mark.

"Today's reflection on independence is vital because Jakarta is now approaching its 500th anniversary," Suhud expressed, Tuesday (8/18).

According to Suhud, the momentum of independence should serve as a reminder that Jakarta's development must not only focus on physical progress but also on strengthening the city's identity and enhancing public welfare.

"Jakarta must establish itself as a modern and cultured city, while ensuring a more prosperous quality of life for its residents," he explained.

Suhud emphasized that the council will continue to carry out its legislative, budgeting, and oversight functions to ensure that the direction of development remains aligned with the public interest.

All these functions, he added, must be directed toward improving people welfare, particularly for groups that require government support and affirmative action.

"We'll continue to strive in performing our duties and functions to drive public prosperity and maintain our commitment to supporting underprivileged people," he concluded.

Previously, the Governor Pramono Anung, underscored that independence must be manifested through tangible action. This includes enhancing the quality of public services, strengthening human resources, improving healthcare facilities, and accelerating infrastructure development, such as the LRT and MRT. These measures are aimed at establishing Jakarta as both an economic hub and a global city.

Jakarta's economic performance, which grew by 5.52 percent in the second quarter of 2026, with inflation maintained at 2.5 percent and the achievement of an Unqualified Opinion (WTP) for nine consecutive years, serves as a strong foundation for the Jakarta government to continue accelerating equitable development.

Further, the Jakarta government continues to foster collaboration in addressing environmental issues and developing creative financing schemes to support development and improve public welfare.
