South Jakarta Social Sub-Department provides skills training to 50 people with social welfare issues (PMKS) so they could have a decent living in the future. Those 50 PMKS are women who worked as scavengers.

“ To 50 scavengers, we teach them how to make several kinds of cakes and breads . The training will be held for two days. Besides cooking techniques, we also prepare materials on simple management to manage a small business,” stated Head of South Jakarta Social Sub-Department, Abdurahman Anwar, Wednesday (5/28).

According to Anwar, building a business is a tough one. That is why this activity is important to change the scavengers’ mindset.

“One of the reasons why they become scavengers is because they were unable to build a new business. So, we motivate them to change and move forward, not becoming scavengers again. They should be able to be entrepreneurs and know what types of products popular in their communities. This is because these 50 women come from 10 sub-districts in South Jakarta which have different characters,” he uttered.

In order to motivate the participants optimally, they are provided with supporting tools to make the cakes, such as gas stoves, electric ovens, trays, wooden spatulas, cauldrons, frying, and pans.

“For the ingredients, we give them sugar, cooking oil, and rice flour. Our target is at least 60 percent of the participants could be entrepreneurs,” told Anwar.
