To anticipate the widespread use of fishing gear that does not fit the rules, Jakarta Maritime, Livestock and Food Security Dept. has involved the police to oversee the boats operating in the waters of Jakarta Bay.

Jakarta Maritime, Livestock and Food Security Dept. Head, Sri Wahyuni disclosed, supervision is compliance with Maritime and Fishery Ministerial Regulation No. 71/Permen-KP/2016 on Fishing Catching and Fishing Gear Zone in Fisheries Management Area of the Republic of Indonesia.

She explained, on July 13, her side had made a memorandum of understanding with the Polda Metro Jaya to conduct a joint patrol in the waters of Jakarta Bay.

"We'll crack down on boats that use fishing gear that doesn't fit the Ministerial Regulation, so we will join the police to conduct patrol," he said, Tuesday (7/18).

She furthered fishing gears prohibited are jumper fish trap, muro ami, seser, huhate, squid angling, and squid jigging. Until June 2017, it has conducted inspection towards 42 boats suspected of using such gears.

"Of 42 boats, only one uses muro ami nets and has been secured. Then 27 out of them use arad nets and we just seize its nets," he closed.
