City to Facilitate Hundreds of Thousands of Street Vendors

Jakarta Provincial Government is going to record the data of street vendors in the capital city before giving them trainings and facilities to trade.

We estimate there are about 600,000 street vendors. But, only 100,000 of them are official, while the rest are illegal street vendors

“We estimate there are about 600,000 street vendors. But, only 100,000 of them are official, while the rest are illegal street vendors,” said Jakarta Vice Governor Basuki T Purnama, Friday (8/29).

According to Basuki, the street vendors must sign agreement letters to bind them. They are also obligated to have accounts in DKI Bank to ease the retribution payment.

Auto-Debet Payment System Applied to Street Vendors in KBT

All this time, the existence of street vendors in the city is disorganized. But later, they will be placed in locations that are not disturbing public order, such as tourism sites, office buildings, and shopping centers.

“We want all street vendors in Jakarta to be under our control. Thus, I would have data on them. For instance, the kind of goods the street vendors sell on Jalan Raden Saleh,” he uttered.

The street vendors to be given trainings and facilities must be those who have Jakarta ID Cards (KTP). The trainings will include culinary training, so they would serve meals that are healthy and clean for their customers.

Moreover, the street vendors must also be responsible if they found illegal street vendors by preventing them. Thus, the amount of street vendors in Jakarta would not increase.

“If they found illegal street vendors but didn’t evict them, we will evict all of them. This will be stated in the agreement letter,” stated Basuki

In addition, urban village and sub-district heads are instructed to participate in controlling the development of the street vendors. The citizens could also participate in watching the street vendors so they would not disturb public order.

Besides must have accounts in DKI Bank, the street vendors must also have identity cards that function as ATM cards as well. Thus, there would be no more identity forgery in the future.

“The name tags are not just printed name tags. They would be ATM cards as well. So, when the daily retribution withdrawn and for three times in a row there is no money in their accounts, they will be blacklisted by the Bank of Indonesia (BI),” asserted Basuki.

Meanwhile, head of Jakarta Cooperatives, Micro, Small and Medium Scale Enterprises and Trade (KUMKMP) Department, Joko Kundaryo, informed that at this time there are 2,000 street vendors whose retribution withdrawn automatically using auto debit. Those street vendors are spread in some locations, namely on Jalan Surabaya (Menteng, Central Jakarta) as well as built landscapes (lokbin) Lorong 103 (Koja, North Jakarta), Meruya Ilir (West Jakarta), and Makasar (East Jakarta).

“Gradually, everything will be using auto debit. The bank is DKI Bank,” he told.
