Maggot House in Tidung Island Starts Operating

Thousand Islands Environment (LH) Sub-agency starts to operate maggot house in Tidung Islands, South Thousand Islands. Installation of the bio-conversion or maggot house is operated by LH Sub-agency's PJLP personnel.

Maggots can be also used to feed livestock or fish, while the residual waste can be used for compost

Thousand Islands LH Sub-agency Head, Djoko Rianto Budi Hartono said, personnel starts to activate the maggot house by utilizing organic waste from the locals.

"Through bio-conversion, we can get maggot larvae and compost. Thus it is very beneficial for Tidung Island residents," he conveyed, Monday (7/27).

Thousand Islands LH Introduces Maggot House Program

According to him, one kilogram of maggot can reduce four kilograms of waste per day.

"Maggots can be also used to feed livestock or fish, while the residual waste can be used for compost," he informed.

 

Recent price of maggot eggs reaches Rp 60,000/kg, dried maggot Rp 80,000/kg and BSF larvae/Prepupa Rp 75,000/kg.

"By installing a maggot house in each inhabited islands until the end of this year, it is not only reducing organic waste but it also becomes a source of additional income for the local residents," he conveyed.
