Elected as C40 Cities Deputy Chairman, Anies is Committed to Tackle Climate Crisis

Jakarta Governor, Anies Baswedan was elected as Steering Committee Member (Deputy Chairman) of C40 Cities together with Tokyo Governor, Yuriko Koike, which was appointed in London, England on Friday (12/4). As Deputy Chairman of C40, he will provide strategic direction to cope with climate crisis for global network that includes 97 best cities in the world.

During COVID-19 pandemic, Anies and Koike will also work together and support Mayors of C40 members to boost city's economic recovery due to impact of COVID-19 pandemic, through an environmentally friendly and equitable approach, as well as handling climate crisis.

"Jakarta is determined to expand the reach of C40 to work with cities and stakeholders in order to fulfill objectives of implementing transformative climate actions, referring to the Paris Agreement. Recent developments in East Asia, Southeast Asia, and Oceania have created an unprecedented opportunity, that is collaboration with the younger generation, private sector, national government, as well as local and international non-government partners," he said as quoted from Jakarta PPID Press Release on Saturday (12/5).

For information, various efforts have been done to improve air quality in Jakarta thus it can be cleaner and pollution-free. On September 2020, he also supported Clean Air Partnership program launching in Jakarta to tackle air pollution and raise people awareness of its impact on health.

Concerning policies taken to handle air pollution, Jakarta Government has ratified Gubernatorial Regulation No. 66/2020 concerning Motor Vehicle Emission Testing in July 2020 and is currently drafting revisions related to Immovable Sources Emission Quality Standards and ISPU revisions by adding PM 2.5 parameter in the calculation.

Previously, in August 2019, Jakarta Government had also issued Gubernatorial Regulation No. 66 regarding Air Quality Control which there were 7 actions to control air pollution.

In this case, government also continues to develop facilities to support the use of emission-free vehicles such as electric bicycles and buses. Cyclists occupy second priority as road users after pedestrians. Besides, bicycle lanes construction also becomes the priority since 2019. Currently, 78.4 kilometers of bicycle lanes have been built on 22 roads with total development target of 500 kilometers by 2030.
