Jakarta Empowerment, Child Protection, and Population Control (PPAPP) Agency collaborates with Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) to hold webinar with theme Disaster Resilient Women for Disaster Resilient Families.

Disaster preparedness is one of the essential things for the community, especially women

PPAPP Holds Various Activities in Commemorating Kartini's Day

The materials provided in this webinar are disaster impacts for women, women's role in disaster management, support for disaster resilient women, important indicators in standard disaster management procedures, disaster management cycle, community resilience development strategy, and risk management.

Jakarta PPAPP Agency Head, Tuty Kusumawati said, this theme was chosen to provide an understanding of gender relation, that in life, both women and men do their important roles in reducing potential for disaster

"Because differences in roles, responsibilities, and access to resources between men and women can affect how they will be affected by various disasters and recover from disasters," she mentioned, Monday (4/26).

Based on data from National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), she continued, about 60-70 percent of disaster victims in Indonesia are women and children. Jakarta Government has data collected from One-Stop Family Data Collection program via Carik Jakarta application which is expected to illustrate the vulnerability of Jakarta families from disasters.

"Disaster preparedness is one of the essential things for the community, especially women. They should be well prepared to face disasters considering most of the victims are women," she stated.

In daily life, women have number of aspects that make them prone to be victims of disasters. Therefore, improving disaster preparedness is absolutely necessary for women.

"Women have strategic roles in disaster management which are very effective in transferring knowledge and insights about disaster preparedness to their children, families, and surrounding environment," she added.

According to her, disaster preparedness should be one of our concerns as an effort to cultivate disaster preparedness through integrated, planned, and sustainable training activities to increase public awareness and vigilance towards Disaster Resilient Indonesia.

"This collaborative activity is expected to be sustainable thus it can produce disaster resilient women, women as disaster preparedness teachers, where the house is the school that will have an impact on disaster resilient families," she explained.

Meanwhile, Jakarta BPBD Prevention Section Head, Rian Sarsono mentioned about BNPB No. 13/2014 on Gender Mainstreaming in Disaster Management Sector that mandated the equalization of roles and needs of women and men.

Women and men have equal access to disaster, participate in disaster management activities, control resources, make decisions, and receive benefits from disaster management policies and programs.

"When disaster occurs, women are not seen as vulnerable group and only become cooks in public kitchen, but they can be agent of change to change the culture in society in order to be more vigilant against disasters. Because disasters can occur at any time and give big impacts if we let our guard down. So we should prepare ourselves for disaster management," he conveyed.
