Jakarta Keeps Distributing Aid for Flood Victims

Some inundated points can recede in less than 6 hours, even though it is in extreme rainfall on January 18

All ranks of the Jakarta administration are coordinating and collaborating with each other to overcome inundated points due to extreme rain and tidal floods on Tuesday - Thursday (January 18 - 20) in Jakarta area.

BPBD Deploys Quick Response Team to Support Disaster Management

They are also quick to help affected residents by distributing logistical assistance, such as food, baby equipment, blankets, medicines, masks, hand sanitizers, etc.

Jakarta Regional Mitigation Agency (BPBD) Acting Head, Sabdo Kurnianto revealed, to handle inundated points, he has involved personnel from PPSU, local urban villages Water Resources (SDA) Agency, Satpol PP, Tagana, as well as Fire and Rescue (Gulkarmat) Agency.

"Some inundated points can recede in less than 6 hours, even though it is in extreme rainfall on January 18. But they once again inundated after being hit by heavy ran on January 19," he expressed, as quoted by Jakarta PPID's press release, Thursday (1/20).

He added, BPBD is also quick in evacuating affected residents by preparing refugee camps and continuing to distribute logistical assistance.

"By doing so, some inundated points have started to recede. Based on the BPBD's data at 3 AM on Thursday (1/20), there are still 50 points inundated. At 12 PM, it left nine inundation points, and we are still working on the field," he added.

He went on to say that the condition was caused by tidal floods in the northern and western areas of Jakarta. Moreover, tidal flood and extreme rain came at the same time.

"Currently, the water level at Pasar Ikan Sluice Gate shows on Alert 4 thus the water will be able to flow into the sea and pumping is done again," he explained.

He expressed, the intensity and rainfall in some areas of Jakarta during the period January 18 (7 AM) - January 19 (7 AM) was in the extreme category, which was more than 150 mm per day.

"If the rainfall was below 100 mm per day, the inundation would recede in six hours. As for the rainfall since January 18 has been above 150 mm per day. We have prepared all the infrastructure early on, such as rubber boats, refugee tents, logistics, etc, thus the handling of the effects of extreme rain can run well. We also continue to monitor conditions on the field," he said.

CHRONOLOGY OF EXTREME RAIN

He explained that the chronology of extreme and heavy rain in Jakarta since 3 PM on Tuesday (1/18) had inundated 57 neighborhoods. But, at 9 PM, only some were still inundated in two neighborhoods.

Then, it rained again with high intensity at 12.30 AM on Wednesday (1/19), causing the river to overflow. At 3 PM, it caused inundation in 102 neighborhoods.

"The data explains some points have receded after being handled by the technical agency. But rain with high intensity came again at around 12.30 AM to 2.30 AM on Wednesday (1/19), where it caused Semongol and Begog rivers overflowed plus tidal floods at 3 AM," he explained.

According to the BPBD's data at 12 PM on Thursday (1/20), nine neighborhoods or 0.030 percent out of 30,470 RTs in Jakarta are still inundated. They are Tegal Alur Urban Village, West Jakarta with water level at 40 centimeters high that caused by heavy rain ad tidal floods, as well as overflowing waters of Semongol River. So far, 437 out of 141 households have been evacuated.

Meanwhile, there are 35 refugees from 22 households in Cengkareng Barat Urban Village, West Jakarta.

"SDA Agency, Gulkarmat and PPSU have been alerted to handle the inundation," he expressed.

Since Tuesday (1/18), the administration had been distributing aid to Tegal Alur in the form of mineral water, family kits, packaged rice meals, children's medicines, skin ointments, cereal porridge, biscuits, tarpaulins, blankets, mattresses, and eucalyptus oil.

Then on Wednesday (1/19), they also sent aid to Cengkareng Barat, Tegal Alur, Kamal and Semper Timur urban villages.

It will be conducted continuously by looking at the situation and conditions, as well as the needs of the affected people. Aside that, the Social Sub-agency has prepared 4,850 packaged rice meals to them.
