Jakarta Governor, Anies Baswedan was one of the speakers in an international discussion forum entitled Transforming Transportation Conference: Climate-Centered Mobility for a Sustainable Recovery, on Thursday (2/17).
First, transportation transformation needs a clear vision
In the forum attended by World Bank Director, Mari Elka Pangestu and President of the Federated States of Micronesia, David W. Panuelo, the Governor explained Jakarta's vision of transforming public transportation as part of building a resilient city.
"First, transportation transformation needs a clear vision, where we have the vision to transform Jakarta from a traffic-dominated, congested, and polluting city to a world leader in public and sustainable transportation. By so, residents and visitors feel that using public transportation is safe, comfortable, and sustainable," he expressed, as quoted by Jakarta PPID's press release, Thursday (2/17).
Odd-Even System is Applied on 13 Roads and 3 Tourist Sites during PPKM Level 3The Jakarta administration is also carrying out a series of paradigm shifts in development in the transportation sector. It is done with a priority scale that puts pedestrians and cyclists in the first place, mass public transportation second, emission-free vehicles third, and lastly private vehicles.
This paradigm shift has an impact on the priority of developing transportation support facilities and improving services, especially public transportation.
Jakarta has also initiated sustainable mobility through an integrated transportation system by shifting the paradigm from Car-Oriented Development to Transit-Oriented Development (TOD). It also creates a city that is more integrated with mass public transport.
Seriousness to improve mass public transportation pays off. Besides being able to build public trust in using public transportation services, Jakarta had received the Sustainable Transportation Award in 2021.
And at the same time, Jakarta had also doubled its public transport coverage (from 42% in 2017 to 82%). Thereby, it is on the right track to provide public transportation within 500 meters of 95% of the population's homes by 2022.
Even, Jakarta is also targeting 14,000 electric buses to operate together with a 60% share of public transportation modes by 2030.
"We believe that the best way to understand a city is to use the public transport system and ensure that everyone living in urban areas has access to safe, intense, affordable, and carbon-free public transportation. Besides connecting places, public transportation also connects people. Public transportation is what unites us," he concluded.
