Governor Hopes RDF Plant to Become Integrated Waste Management Solution

Jakarta Governor, Anies Baswedan gave directions in the commemoration of the 2022 National Waste Care Day (HPSN), with the theme 'Jakarta Collaboration Festival Aware of Waste', which emphasizes multi-stakeholder collaboration efforts in overcoming waste problems on Monday (2/21). at Bantargebang Landfill, Bekasi, West Java.

According to him, in this year's HSPN, the Jakarta administration conducted a groundbreaking for the RDF Plant facility to process waste, either new waste or waste that had been collected at Bantargebang Landfill.

"It is projected to be up to 2,000 tons, with details of 1,000 tons of new waste and 1,000 tons of existing waste in Bantargebang area. This is expected to be one of the downstream solutions regarding waste management, which has been sent to Bantargebang area," he expressed, as quoted by Jakarta PPID's press release.

He also explained that the number of those who produce waste by managing their waste is not balanced. Because of that, those who manage waste are certainly aware of the volume and the problem, but those who produce are not necessarily aware of it.

"Let's all wake up to the realization that every time we produce waste if we calculated earlier the average is 0.7 kg per day. Let's reduce the waste, let's use the residue, so it doesn't become a pile of garbage, and let's sort it thus helps in its management," he explained.

He also mentioned the Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) today also handed over the assets of the Red-white Waste Power Plant (PLTSa) to the administration

"This is a pilot project between BRIN and Jakarta. We appreciate it, a waste-fueled power plant created by the nation's children," he explained.

The event itself was held as part of a series of activities leading to the Jakarta Waste Awareness Movement Week (PGJSS), which falls in the forthcoming June.

"PGJSS will be implemented through waste reduction activities at source by 2,743 RWs in Jakarta through the RW Waste Management Division, including simultaneous/colossal actions involving all RWs to increase public awareness of the handling of waste generated by household activities," he concluded.

Good waste management is a program that emphasizes community involvement in sorting and reducing waste at the source and good management of final waste processing facilities.

"Therefore, hope Jakarta's waste management will be better in the future," he hoped.

Several collaborators have been active in assisting Jakarta residents in cultivating the Jakarta Waste Awareness Movement, such as the Indonesia Indah Foundation (IIF) which has consistently built awareness on waste management with the garbage collection movement since 2019.

Tunas Muda Care (TCare) takes part in building the KSBB solid waste platform as well as the aggregator for KSBB solid waste. Wahana Visi Indonesia (WVI) continuously assists the community in reducing waste at the source.

Divers Clean Action (DCA) focuses on good waste management in Seribu Islands. Trashless City/Lab Question? which sustainably builds public awareness to reduce and sort waste from homes.

Waste4Change acts as the initiator of social entrepreneurship based on waste management in Jakarta. PLN, which consistently has a program for fostering waste banks in Jakarta.

Unilever Indonesia has a role to invite people to do #GenerasiPilahPlastik by inviting people to become a generation that is more responsible for the packaging they use, especially plastic packaging.

Eco-enzyme Nusantara Community continues to invite people to process organic waste into eco-enzyme with the tagline of caring for Jakarta with eco-enzyme. Tropical which issued the first refillable cooking oil packaging in Jakarta, and Adhi Karya who built the RDF Plant and Landfill Mining at Bantargebang Landfill.

Meanwhile, Government Procurement Observer, M Zulfikar Dachlan said that Jakarta's step in building the RDF Plant and Landfill Mining was a breakthrough and innovation that needed to be appreciated in the waste management sector through the use of the National Economic Recovery (PEN) fund, apart from being an alternative to Government and Business Entity Cooperation (KPBU) scheme.

This project was in line with the central government's program for economic recovery. The use of domestic products, empowerment of MSMEs, and local workers were very important aspects of the implementation of the project.

He added it could answer several questions at once.

"Reduction of waste generation, utilization of waste into alternative energy sources, and options for implementable waste management schemes. As a pioneer, hope the Jakarta initiative can be replicated in other areas," he said.
