Disbud Holds Ondel-Ondel Performance in Jakarta

The Jakarta Culture Agency (Disbud) is about to hold the Ondel-Ondel (giant Betawi effigies) Performance from June 18 to 26, 2022.

There will be around 35 art studios throughout Jakarta with a total of 525 participants

Jakarta Culture Agency Head Iwan Henry Wardhana said the event received support from the community through good cooperation with various parties.

It was carried out as a form of the Jakarta Government's concern and responsibility in dealing with Ondel-ondel buskers issues and its preservation in Jakarta.

"There will be around 35 art studios throughout Jakarta with a total of 525 participants. They will feature dynamic Ondel-ondel performances," he conveyed as quoted from Jakarta PPID Press Release, Monday (6/20).

It would be held in Kota Kasablanka Mall, Kota Tua area, Baywalk Mall, Setu Babakan Betawi Cultural Village, Taman Ismail Marzuki Jakarta Art Center, Pekan Raya Jakarta (PRJ), AEON Mall JGC, and Glodok Chinatown area.

"As an icon of Betawi culture, Ondel-ondel needs special attention. Besides, it is also held as an embodiment of Jakarta City of Collaboration where the government, the private sector, and Ondel-ondel art studios work together to preserve the culture in Jakarta," he asserted.

For information, the Ondel-ondel performance is proof for the private sector, especially shopping centers that have fully committed to supporting the Bylaw (Perda) No. 4/2015 on Betawi Culture Preservation.

It is held as a part of coaching activities for Ondel-ondel performers in Jakarta, including Ondel-ondel workshops and performances.

Previously, the workshop had been held on June 7 and 8, 2022 at Setu Babakan Betawi Cultural Village presenting cultural practitioners as speakers, Yahya Andi Saputra, Ahmad Supandi, and Imron Hasbullah.
