Jakarta to Have New Biological Technology WWTPs This Year

Perumda PAL Jaya is about to soon add two wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) using biological technology, Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR).
The media has a function as a place for bacteria to decompose waste
The technology, which had previously been applied to the Setiabudi and Krukut WWTPs, has also become a reference for the construction of WWTPs in the Nusantara Capital City (IKN).
Perumda PAL Jaya President Director Aris Supriyanto said the MBBR technology was chosen, as it is more effective and efficient than conventional WWTPs. It is the decomposition of wastewater using an aeration system and media thus later the processed water is safe to be returned to the environment following the Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation number 68/2016.
City Prepares Centralized Domestic Wastewater Management System"The media has a function as a place for bacteria to decompose waste. As a result, there is less excess sludge from decomposition than conventional ones," he expressed, Wednesday (6/29).
In the conventional technology, he explained the bacteria that function to decompose the waste were not placed in the media thus it was also wasted with the excess sludge. While the MBBR technology works to minimize wasted bacteria thus it continues to grow and with more bacteria, the decomposition process is faster.
The results of this technology were able to reduce the value of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) from 150-200 mg per liter to below 30 mg per liter, thus the treated water meets quality standards and is safe for the environment.
Of the total processed Krukut WWTP, around 30 percent of the volume of the water is reprocessed to be used for non-consumable water needs such as cement mixtures for construction, watering plants, and flushing. While the sludge produced by the Krukut WWTP will be further processed at the Pulo Gebang Sludge Treatment Plant (IPLT).
Based on the results of research and data processing, MBBR technology is the most suitable for urban applications. Because of that, two units of MBBR WWTP would be developed on Jalan MH Thamrin and in Ancol areas
"This is in the process of being developed and is expected to operate this year. We also plan to realize it on Jalan TB Simatupang," he closed.
