The preservation of Betawian figures for street names in Jakarta should be appreciated, as it is a form of respect and appreciation for their services and struggles. It was stated by a Betawian public figure from Condet, East Jakarta Iwan Setiawan, on Wednesday (6/29).

He gave an example of the name Entong Gendut, which replaced the name Jalan Budaya in Condet area. It was a form of respect and an introduction to the history of this Betawian people's warrior character.

Entong Gendut is a warrior and community leader in the Condet area who firmly opposed the Dutch East Indies government in 1916. Together with about 100 followers, most of whom were farmers at the time, he fought against the landlords and the colonial government who acted arbitrarily and oppressed the people.

"It is normal for his name to be immortalized as the name of the current street," he explained.

Regarding the pros and cons of changing the name of this street, he assessed that it is normal in the era of democracy.

However, he disagreed with the opinion that the change in the name of this street complicates the population administration data for residents.

"The Jakarta administration will assist in the process of changing this data, including other relevant agencies such as the Police for making driver's license (SIM) and vehicle registration certificate (STNK)," he concluded.
