Jakarta to Launch Waste-Processing Facility

The city administration has a plan to build a waste-processing facility into electrical power in a bid to resolve waste problem in Jakarta. As a pilot, the machine is planned to be built in North Jakarta.

We are currently looking for the right location. If this is successful in North Jakarta, similar thing will be done in other areas

The waste-processing machine is the technology of the UK and Italy. Later on, each 400 tons of waste which have been processed, can produce electrical energy about 6-8 megawatts. In addition, residual ash from waste burning can also be used as a cement mixture or material for paving blocks.

Jakarta Vice Governor, Djarot Saiful Hidajat disclosed the technology uses a method of sanitary land fields, which is by stacking and stockpiling waste is not suitable for urban areas. The reason is, it requires a large land or about 2-2.5 hectares.

"The machine fits in rural areas maybe. Don't be like in Leuwi Gajah, because too many waste dumped and finally injure people," he expressed, Thursday (1/15).

As a solution, the facility would be built in North Jakarta. Djarot assessed, electricity generated from processing can be resold or as an initial stage to be flowed to the flats in North Jakarta.

"We are currently looking for the right location. If this is successful in North Jakarta, similar thing will be done in other areas," he revealed.
