This disaster education approach uses a gamification model

The Jakarta Provincial Government continues to be committed to making various efforts to reduce disaster risk, both through physical development and training to increase awareness and capacity to deal with disaster threats. One of these efforts is by presenting public service innovations in the form of building a Disaster Communication, Information, and Education (IEC) Room.

In his speech, the Acting Governor revealed that this KIE Disaster Room is one of the disaster literacy centers in Jakarta which is a real form of public service innovation regarding disaster prevention and preparedness services. It is a mandatory matter for the Jakarta Government in the areas of peace, public order, and community protection in disaster management programs.

"Today, we have gone around the KIE Disaster Room, there are several rooms here, there are first aid procedures and flood prevention. There was a boat, then how to evacuate when a room is on fire, the children can go to a safer place, and there is earthquake training (self-rescue). SAR also explains how to evacuate. It's a partnership, thank you." he expressed, as quoted by Jakarta PPID's press release.

This KIE Disaster Room is the first disaster literacy center that uses virtual reality technology, which is expected to be put to good use by the community to create a culture of disaster awareness in the people of Jakarta to make Jakarta a Disaster Resilient City.

"Please disseminate this to all Jakarta people, not only in Jakarta, Jabodetabek is welcome, students are welcome too. Because disaster management must start from ourselves," he stated.

He also instructed the Jakarta Education Agency Head to socialize the existence and benefits of the Jakarta CIE Disaster Room to educational units and students at all levels of educators in Jakarta.

Jakarta BPBD Head, Isnawa Adji explained that the KIE Disaster Room is a form of Literacy Room as a means of increasing understanding and education of disaster in the form of an interactive vehicle for residents, especially students. Kindergarten, elementary, high school, college students, and the general public in Jakarta can visit the KIE Disaster Room which operates Monday-Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM.

"In this space, several thematic rooms have been prepared, such as first aid education rooms, fire fighting, self-rescue against fire smoke, flood education, and dialogue rooms about the disaster. This disaster education approach uses a gamification model through virtual reality and other interactive media which are currently being developed to create a Disaster Awareness Culture from an early age in society. Thus, the right response is built when a disaster occurs and local wisdom as a form of disaster mitigation," he added.

At the same time, BNPB's System and Strategy Deputy, Raditya Jati appreciated the presence of public service innovation in the form of the Jakarta Disaster KIE Room.

"Congratulations, this is an innovation whose direction is to make our nation a nation that is resilient to disasters. One of the leaps we have to make is with disaster education and literacy. It is one that was initiated by the Jakarta Government, as our challenge going forward is the problem of educating future generations," he explained.

It was also attended and witnessed by City Secretary, Uus Kuswanto; Jakarta BPBD Head, Isnawa Adji; Central Jakarta Mayor, Dhany Sukma; Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency Head, Satriadi Gunawan; Jakarta Education Agency Head, Nahdiana; and Jakarta Regional Working Unit Head and its ranks.
