Seaweed Cultivation on Lancang Island Reactivated

Seaweed cultivation on Lancang Island, Pari Island Urban Village, South Seribu Islands has been reactivated after being suspended since 2020, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Lancang Island Seaweed Cultivator, Nurhayati said she and six other women formed a new group for seaweed cultivation, as the economy and social life of the community began to grow.

"Yesterday, we started planting green cottoni seaweed again," she expressed, Friday (1/20).

She explained that his group bought the seeds and provided the cultivation equipment independently. They bought one ton of seeds for Rp 7,000 per kilogram from the Tidung Sejahtera cultivation group on Tidung Island.

According to her, they used the off-bottom planting method without buoys at a depth of one to two meters. Seaweed seeds were tied with a rope with a length of between 12 -20 meters.

"The rope is tied to stakes in a position like floating in the middle of the depths of seawater," she explained.

Seribu Islands Maritime, Agriculture, and Food Security Sub-agency (KPKP) Head, Devi Lidya appreciated the enthusiasm of the cultivators on Lancang Island who was back to being active. His party would provide coaching and assistance to them.

"We will make them a target group. Apart from training, they can also receive stimulation of facilities and infrastructure," she stated.
