Acting Govenor Heru Plants New Trees at TMR

Jakarta Acting Governor, Heru Budi Hartono continued the Jumat Menanam (Friday Planting) activity at Ragunan Zoo (TMR), Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta, Friday (2/3). He planted five trees type Tabebuya and gave the name of the baby elephant and giraffe.

Sustainability is good

Together with South Jakarta Mayor Munjirin and TMR Management Unit Head Dr. Endah Ramiyati, he also gave the name Superior to a male elephant, a pair of Sumatran elephants, Putri and Arly. He also gave the name Tazo to the giraffe cub from Australian Taronga Zoo.

Further, he explained the reason for choosing the name "Superior" for the calf born on September 5, 2022. As the name implies, he hopes that the calf will grow up well and be superior to its two mothers, while the name Tazo stands for Taronga Zoo in Australia, where both parents come from.

Then he appreciated the TMR Management Unit that has worked hard to care for animals and preserve the greenery in the zoo.

"Sustainability is good. I think everything is good enough," he expressed, as quoted by Jakarta PPID's press release.

Nevertheless, he urged that the variety of animals in the TMR be added, thus it will attract more visitors. He also prohibited the logging of trees as long as the TMR management unit carried out beautification.

Responding to this matter, TMR Management Unit Head, Endah Rumiyati explained that his party was trying to carry out beautification by repairing cages and implementing a zoning system for animal species such as primates, carnivores, herbivores, and other types.

Because the area of TMR reaches 127 hectares with a total of 2,275 animals, the beautification process can take a long time (more than 2 years). To add to the variety of animals, she explained that her party continues to make efforts to exchange animals from zoos abroad and within the country.

Shortly, new animals will arrive in the form of a pair of dragons, the result of exchanges with Taman Safari, Bogor, West Java, and several primates. With the birth of Superior, TMR has 14 Sumatran elephants whose ages range from 3 months to 53 years. Generally, Sumatran elephants only give birth to one child in each pregnancy with a gestation period of about 22 months.

Meanwhile, with the birth of Tazo on August 21, 2022, TMR has four giraffes consisting of a pair of mothers and two cubs. The pair of broodstock was the result of TMR's collaboration with Taronga Zoo Australia which was brought in on August 17, 2015. His party will also continue to pay attention to the trees in the zoo environment. Because the age of the trees has reached tens of years, some even hundreds of years old.

"We'll pay attention to the existence of these trees. By the directions from the Acting Governor, no trees should be cut down during beautification. That is our priority," she uttered.

To keep the environment clean and beautiful, the Jakarta Government appealed to all parties, including TMR visitors, not to litter. By participating in protecting the environment, not only preserving nature but the survival of animals can also be maintained properly.
