Ramadan Starts Thursday, the Government Declares

The government has announced that this year's Ramadan will start on Thursday (3/23) following a limited isbat (confirmation) meeting with several Islamic organizations and other relevant parties in Jakarta on Wednesday (3/22) night.

The Isbat meeting was led by Religion Minister, Yaqut Cholil Qoumas at the H.M Rasjidi Building Auditorium, Religion Ministry Office, Jalan MH Thamrin, Central Jakarta.

"Based on hisab and rukyat methods, the position of the new moon is above the horizon. The Isbat Council unanimously determines that 1 Shawwal 1444 Hijri falls on Thursday (3/23)," Quomas expressed, Wednesday (3/23).

He explained the position of the new moon high or crescent in Indonesia is between six degrees 46.2 minutes to eight degrees 43.2 minutes. From the results of observations, some reported seeing the new moon according to the criteria for entering the new moon.

"We use the method of hisab or calculation and rukyat or direct observation of the new moon. These two methods complement each other and are not in conflict," he explained.

DPR Commission VIII Chairman, Ashabul Kahfi urged residents continues to maintain peace and harmony during Ramadan.

"Do not eat and drink in public to protect and respect those who are fasting. All must maintain order and security. Fill Ramadan with worship," he stressed.

He also asked the Religion Ministry to facilitate positive community activities during Ramadan.

"Happy fasting worship for Muslims," he stated.
