Floods in 2 Sub-Districts Force 551 People to Flee

A torrential rain in Jakarta and its surrounding areas since Friday (3/20) afternoon until Saturday (3/21), forcing people living in Jatinegara and Makasar Sub-Districts, East Jakarta, take a refuge in three locations. From both areas, the number of flood victims is totally reaching 151 households or 151 people from Cipinang Melayu Urban Village, Makasar. 

They currently survive in a refugee camps due to the flooding has not receded

Chairman of RW 03 Cipinang Melayu, Muchtar Usman revealed flood came at around 9.45 PM, following the overflowing of Sunter River. Initially, the water level was only 30 centimeters, but it continues to raise up to 1.5 meters now, especially at RT 10, 11,12,13, and 14.

Seven Urban Villages in Jakarta Flooded

“Since last night, as much as 260 residents in five RTs had been evacuated to the Al-Muqorobin Mosque and RW Post. They currently survive in a refugee camps due to the flooding has not receded,” he told.

Such condition also disturbed a sunatan circumcision ceremony from RT 02/03 Cipinang Melayu. The ceremony had to be moved to a tent and will be held tonight.

On the other hand, around 251 residents of RW 04 Cipinang Melayu also evacuated to the Borobudur University's Grand Mosque. They took a refuge last night.

While in Kampung Pulo, Kampung melayu, Jatinegara, flood has been soaking residential with water level 1.5 meters, precisely at 7 RWs and 47 RTs. Thus far, the number of flood victims in such areas is 1,508 households or 3,427 people.

Head of Jatinegara Sub-District, Syofan Taher stated there has been no evacuation, where the residents prefer to stay in each house.

“If they want to be evacuated, we have set up the refugee camps,” he finished.
