Heru Explains Policies and Strategic Steps towards Jakarta as a Global City

Jakarta is being prepared to become a global economic and business center. Various strategies have been implemented to realize Jakarta as a global city. This statement was conveyed by the Jakarta Acting Governor, Heru Budi Hartono when he opened and gave direction at the Seminar "Towards the Future of Jakarta as a Global City" held by the Jakarta Human Resources Development Agency (BPSDM) at the Big Theatre, Taman Ismail Marzuki, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (11/28).

Because like it or not, we have to compete with other cities

The seminar was also an outreach to representatives of regional apparatus organizations (OPD) to work together to develop the City of Jakarta.

"Today, the Government Assistant through the BPSDM Head gathered 750 echelon III, so they can know what direction Jakarta will take in the future," he expressed, in the Jakarta Provincial Government.

City of Jakarta Has Advantage of Becoming a Global City

Today's seminar discussed various challenges and opportunities for the future of Jakarta, innovation and global city development strategies, as well as the role and steps of the government in developing the city.

According to the Acting Governor, there were various aspects that should be considered to build a city.

"Building the city of Jakarta has an assessment of becoming a global city. What are the assessments, business activities, security, health, schools, museums, Green Open Space (RTH), transportation, and so on," he explained.

To make Jakarta a global city, synergy was needed with various parties to determine the direction of Jakarta after it was no longer the nation's capital.

"Because like it or not, we have to compete with other cities after our city no longer become capital cities. That's why, we are building enthusiasm, thus all levels, investors, the private sector, including those related to the tourism sector, OPD will later collect data to convey to Kearney," he explained.

Kearney Indonesia President Director and Partner, Shirley Santoso, appreciated the Jakarta Government's steps in synergizing with various parties to develop Jakarta, one of which is Kearney Indonesia. He assessed, Jakarta's contribution was very important to Indonesia's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which was around 16-17 percent.

"We're very happy to hear Jakarta's aspirations for the future. This is also the right moment, the opportunity is very right and Jakarta will remain important in the future because of its important contribution to Indonesia's GDP in the future," he explained.

He also expressed optimism in guiding Jakarta towards becoming a global city with a global city index ranking that has the potential to continuously increase. This assessment was based on economic conditions, pace of globalization, human resources, information and technology, cultural experiences, and political involvement.

"So, if we look at the Global City Index which we carry out every year, Jakarta is currently ranked 74th and there is a lot of potential that we can develop to increase Jakarta's ranking much higher in terms of global cities," he explained.
