Gabions on South Side of Untung Jawa Island Repaired

PPSU from the Seribu Islands Water Resources Sub-agency (SDA) is conducting repairs and maintenance on gabions on the south side of Untung Jawa Island, Untung Jawa Island Urban Village, South Seribu Islands Sub-district.

This is done to anticipate the impact of sea waves on the beach

Untung Jawa Island Urban Village SDA Coordinator, Mahiar said the gabions repairs along 75 meters were made by arranging the stones in a wire basket that is two meters long, 1.2 meters wide, and 50 centimeters high.

"This is done to anticipate the impact of sea waves on the beach," he expressed, Monday (4/22).

December, Gabions Installation along Agung Perkasa 8 Channel Completed

He explained the progress work that has been ongoing since April 18, 2024, has touched 30 meters.

"It is targeted for completion in three days, as we are still waiting for split stones or river stones," he explained.

According to him, this gabion was damaged because many of the wire baskets were damaged, thus many of the split stones inside were swept away by the sea waves.

"We involve 19 personnel to the location. Five people are assigned with making the gabion baskets and 14 other conduct the installation," he added.

Hopefully, repairing the gabions would further protect the outer side of the embankment from being hit by waves during bad weather.

"We have installed gabions on all sides of the island embankment to withstand big waves and prevent damage to the embankment from abrasion," he added.

The repair above received appreciation from Untung Jawa Island Puja Berhias Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis) Chairmanz Rusli.

"The existence of gabions maintained and sturdy will prevent waves from easily entering residential areas. So, locals can still feel comfortable and safe," he stated.
