City Administration Targets for High and Even Coverage of PIN Polio 2024

Jakarta Provincial Government officially launched National Polio Immunization Week (PIN) 2024 for children aged 0-7 years, Tuesday (7/23).

the target of more than 1.2 million children

This launch coincides with the commemoration of National Children's Day (HAN) 2024 with the theme, 'Protected Children, Advanced Indonesia'.

Acting Jakarta Regional Secretary's Social Welfare Assistant, Suharini Eliawati, launched the province-level program at RPTRA Pulo Besar, Sunter Jaya, North Jakarta, together with North Jakarta Mayor, Ali Maulana Hakim and Jakarta Health Agency Head, Ani Ruspitawati.

This Week, Polio Vaccination Targets 238,516 Children in South Jakarta

The immunization in Jakarta is held in two rounds with daily target 181,930 children receiving the two-drop vaccine by mouth out of a total target 1,209,303 children, with a target of 95 percent for each dose. The first round will be held on July 23-August 3, 2024. The second round will be on August 6-17, 2024.

"In my opinion, the target of more than 1.2 million children spread across six regions of Jakarta is quite extraordinary. But if we work together, this number will become lighter. The Mayor of North Jakarta has prepared strategies, such as those carried out in RPTRAs, Early Childhood Education (PAUD), schools, tourist attractions, and so on. Then there are Human Resources (HR) from the Health Agency who have mapped out the implementation of PIN polio throughout the city of Jakarta, so that each of the targets for these two rounds can be met," she said, as quoted from Jakarta Provincial Government's press release.

Elly added that PIN Polio must become a community movement. Because the rate of transmission of the disease caused by this virus is very high. So the Jakarta Provincial Government is committed to suppressing the transmission of the polio virus by involving community participation.

"This is what we have to guard against. Even now, Jakarta still has zero cases. But this is the responsibility of all of us, not only the Jakarta Provincial Government, but also the community," Elly added.

Jakarta Health Agency Head, Ani Ruspitawati, explained the implementation of PIN Polio is an effort to prevent Extraordinary Events (KLB) Poliomyelitis (polio virus disease) situations in Indonesia. Even though there are no polio cases in Jakarta, there is still a need for movement to provide massive polio immunization.

"Based on a standardized risk assessment from WHO, Jakarta Province is in the medium risk category for polio transmission. Moreover, seeing that the level of population mobility in Jakarta is very high, the flow of population moving from other provinces to Jakarta is also very open, so efforts are needed to provide a massive immunization response. Of course, with high and even coverage, it is hoped that Jakarta can be free and stop transmission of the polio virus," Ani explained.

Meanwhile, North Jakarta Mayor, Ali Maulana Hakim, said the PIN Polio target in his area is 218,303 children with a daily target of 31,180 children per day. "So we have divided the total target of children aged 0 to 7 years into 6 sub-districts to meet the daily targets. So the sub-district heads are now the leaders in coordinating the pentahelix concept. "So everyone will be involved, because this is our responsibility," said Ali.

The implementation of PIN Polio in Jakarta is not only carried out at Posyandu, Community Health Centers, hospitals, and other health service places, but also targets RW offices, RPTRA, PAUD, places of worship, tourist attractions, and places that are often used as gathering places for children, such as playgrounds, markets and shopping centers. "We do all this to achieve the targets that have been set," stated Ali.
