Commission B Pushes for Improved Animal Health Services

Jakarta DPRD Commission B Member, Francine Widjojo encouraged the Jakarta Provincial Government to pay special attention to animal health services. Hopefully, Jakarta will become an animal-friendly city.

"Jakarta as a global city should pay attention to the welfare of pets, livestock and stray animals," she expressed, Friday (11/15).

Hence, she proposed the construction of animal hospitals and Animal Health Centers (Puskeswan) in every administrative city in Jakarta. She also pushed for Puskeswan to provide 24-hour emergency services.

"Currently, Jakarta only has one Puskeswan located in Ragunan, South Jakarta. We want to see at least five Puskeswan in each administrative city so that animals in Jakarta can get proper health services with 24-hour emergency services," she expressed.

She assessed that the capacity of animal health services needs to be improved. Because the realization of the number of animal health services always exceeds the strategic plan target of the KPKP Agency.

In addition, he also encouraged the Jakarta government to increase the quota for the street cat sterilization program. This request is based on aspirations from the community.

"Many aspirations from residents want an increase in sterilization quotas. This is not only about animal welfare, but also controlling the population of street cats in our city," she explained.

Jakarta Maritime, Agriculture and Food Security Agency (KPKP) Head, Suharini Eliawati ensured the Jakarta Government also pays attention to animal welfare in four ways, namely freedom from hunger, fear, heat and rain, and illness. She also encouraged owners to be responsible for their pets.

Meanwhile, to handle stray animals, the Jakarta Government has provided a shelter located at the Ragunan Animal Health Center, South Jakarta. She also emphasized the importance of sterilization to control the animal population. According to her, the quota for additional animal sterilization will also continue to be increased.

"If we do vaccination, it doesn't reduce the population. What controls the population is sterilization," she continued.

To provide optimal animal health services, the Jakarta Government provided two animal health centers in Jakarta, namely in Ragunan, South Jakarta and Pondok Ranggon, East Jakarta.

"If every region had it, it would definitely need energy," she stated.
