Jakarta Vice Governor Rano Karno led the Siap Jaga (Siaga) Jakarta assembly at Pluit Reservoir Park, Pluit Urban Village, Penjaringan, North Jakarta as a concrete step to increase preparedness in facing potential flooding due to massive water flow, tidal flooding, or local rain.
"Dredging is targeted until August with one million cubic meters dredged,"
He asserted that the activity aimed to ensure coordination, personnel readiness, operation of flood control infrastructure, pumps, floodgates, drainage, as well as optimal dredging in reservoirs and macro and micro channels.
City Government Prepares Strategic Steps to Anticipate FloodHe informed that some time ago the rainfall intensity in Jakarta once again broke the record by reaching 300 millimeters, causing flooding in Jakarta.
"Alhamdulillah, today we start our movement to protect Jakarta, especially against flooding, inundation, and tidal floods. We shouldn't wait for flooding then dredge the mud. But we should dredge the mud before flooding," he stated, Sunday (2/23).
In an effort to control flooding, he explained, the Jakarta Government will simultaneously dredge 17 rivers and canals. Moreover, a number of programs will be also implemented, including building new polder, increasing the quantity and capacity of both static and mobile water pumps.
Then, build tidal mitigation embankments in five crucial locations, while waiting for the National Capital Integrated Coastal Development (NCICD) planned by the central government.
"Dredging is targeted until August with one million cubic meters dredged. For tidal mitigation embankments, Insya Allah this year, because we have five crucial tidal points. The most critical one is Muara Baru. I have visited the location, and it will become our focus," he mentioned.
He called on all elements and communities to take an active role in fixing Jakarta, especially from flooding by maintaining environmental cleanliness, supporting the smooth flow of water.
Residents were also asked not to build buildings above the water, both river or water channel, and immediately report potential blockages or flood to the authorities so that the problems could be handled immediately.
"I believe with hard work, togetherness, and active participation from all elements and the community in mitigation efforts, the flooding in Jakarta can be handled. Thus Jakartans are safe and protected from flood risks," he uttered.
Meanwhile, Jakarta Water Resources (SDA) Agency Acting Head, Ika Agustin Ningrum added, to prepare for rainy season, her side will continue dredging channels in five municipalities and Thousand Islands Regency.
To support the implementation of Siaga Jakarta, SDA Agency will deploy 206 heavy equipment, consisting of 122 amphibious heavy equipment used in dredging and 84 heavy equipment for physical activities.
"We are also assisted by LH Agency through Water Body Unit (UPK) with 84 units. SDA Agency's blue troops and Rainbow troops are ready and eager to protect Jakarta residents," he said.
